Who reaches out from Salem
Most people who contact me aren't in crisis. They're in a situation that has been building — a relationship that's become harder to navigate, a family system under stress, or a pattern that keeps repeating despite everyone's best efforts.
Common reasons North Shore couples and families reach out:
Recurring conflict that goes nowhere — the same argument, different week
A partner or family member struggling with addiction, anxiety, or a mental health crisis
Disconnection that's grown quietly over years
A major transition — a move, a job loss, a new child — that strained the relationship
A family where one person's struggle is affecting everyone else
If this sounds familiar, you're in the right place.
Why Salem couples and families choose telehealth
Salem has a strong community and a growing number of mental health providers, but access to therapists who specialize specifically in couples and family work remains limited. Many people find the right specialist is not conveniently located, or that scheduling in-person sessions around two partners' or a whole family's calendars is harder than it sounds.
Telehealth solves both problems. You get access to a therapist who specializes in couples and family work, without coordinating a commute on Route 128. You each join from wherever you are — different rooms in the same house, or different locations entirely.
The work itself is no different. Sessions are 50 minutes, structured, and focused. The quality of the therapy doesn't change because the medium is Zoom.
Maxwell Crystal, LICSW
I'm a licensed independent clinical social worker (LICSW) licensed in Massachusetts and Vermont. I work with couples, families, and individuals across the North Shore and Greater Boston, including Beverly, Salem, Newburyport, Marblehead, and Swampscott, navigating complex relational situations via telehealth.
My background includes serving as Clinical Director of a residential behavioral health program and as a hospice social worker leading a bereavement program. That experience, working in high-pressure clinical environments and supporting families through serious situations, shapes how I approach private practice work.
My approach is structured and direct. We identify what is actually driving the pattern, clarify what is in your control, and build changes that hold over time.
